With the high price of gasoline, many of us will be adjusting vacation plans this year. It may mean a shorter trip or even none at all. Enhancing the back yard so that it becomes a welcome respite will be all-important.
So, what will it take? Obviously it can range from installing a swimming pool to simply clearing a corner for an umbrella table and a few chairs or anything in between.
Many neighborhoods already have a community swimming pool with a homeowners' association to manage it. If you can take advantage of such a situation, all you need think about at home is a barbecue area and a few chairs or lounges to encourage relaxation.
There's already a serious move that sees working in the back yard as a positive way to relieve stress and cope with the rigors of everyday life. The trick is to keep it simple. Don't let backyard plans and chores become overwhelming.
First step is cleaning up. Remove any debris, weeds, less-than-happy bushes and perennials that detract from top appeal. This is where the right tool helps.
If you are purchasing, get the top quality you can afford. If you're using whatever you have on hand, make sure it's clean, rust-free and sharp. It's worth taking the tools to be professionally sharpened if necessary.
Long-handled tools, well sharpened, can make quick work of weeding beds and clearing out borders. Avoid the strain of getting down on your knees for these tasks. Make sure the soil is damp so that the whole weed, roots and all, will be removed.
Create a calm atmosphere with soft pastel colors in the plants you choose. White, soft pinks, lavenders and creams will go far to make a soothing, welcoming effect.
Don't choose plants that will require a great deal of attention and maintenance. Avoid any that need frequent deadheading or pruning to look their best.
Introduce the soothing sound of wind chimes or trickling water. A recirculating fountain can do double duty in attracting birds as well as providing appealing sound.
Bird feeders will also help attract feathered visitors. Just remember that they must be kept clean and free of dirt. A tray of nuts and some fruit and berries will draw in many different species.
Be sure there is nearby cover so that the birds are not prey for cats and other predators.
Barbecue areas can also range from the deluxe to the very simple. Grills may be either charcoal or gas. They may be magnificent built-in models or simple tabletop appliances. Finish the area with cupboards, even a small refrigerator on the patio and you're set with a comfortable outdoor kitchen for the summer.
Manmade shade can help if your back yard doesn't have well-placed trees. Canopies, some with screening, can do the job. So can umbrella tables, even individual clip-on umbrellas to snap on each chair.
Most important: involve the whole family, every step of the way. Kids will enjoy helping with the work if they've had a voice in deciding what the backyard project will include.
