Some hard-hit homeowners looking for help to save their homes are getting sucker-punched by a recent scam. Callers are offering to assist cash-strapped homeowners with the application to Keep Your Home California for as much as $900.
State officials are reminding homeowners that Keep Your Home California is a free program, from the first phone call to the final approval of mortgage assistance. The federally funded program has assisted about 12,000 homeowners and issued more than $200 million, and every family approved for funding can get the help for free.
Officials are warning homeowners about the scam, and encouraging them instead to call (888)954-5337 to learn more about the free program that assists out-of-work homeowners with as much as $3,000 per month for nine months with their mortgage payments to a maximum of $100,000 in principal reduction.
